The General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) is Morocco's national police force founded on May 16th of 1956 by the late King Mohamed V and reports to the Ministry of Interior.
It is tasked with upholding the law and public order and is committed to a new security vision, including the construction of new DGSN barracks and regional headquarters of the Directorate General for Territorial Surveillance.
The DGSN comprises four sections: Urban Corps, Judiciary Police, Mobile Intervention Companies, and Internal Security Service. It has a budget of $4.11 billion and a significant number of personnel, with 78,146 police officers in 2021.
The DGSN plays a crucial role in reinforcing public security and implementing major upgrades to maintain strict security standards at seaports, airports, and border crossings.
The current Head of Morocco's General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) is Abdellatif Hammouchi.
He has recently met with the Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to strengthen security cooperation between the two organizations.
In August 2023, Mr. Hammouchi announced a new list of appointments to various senior positions within the DGSN, aiming to increase the efficiency and productivity of the organization.
Abdellatif Hammouchi has been the Head Director of the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) in Morocco since December 15, 2005. As of the current date, he has been in this position for over 17 years.
Before becoming the Head Director of the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) in Morocco, Abdellatif Hammouchi had a long and distinguished career in the Moroccan security and intelligence services. Some key points in his background include:
- Born in 1966 in Taza, Morocco.
- Graduated from the University of Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah in Fes.
- Joined the police as an officer in 1993
- Served as the head of the Moroccan Internal Intelligence apparatus (DGST) before being appointed as the Director of the General Directorate for National Security in December 2005.
- Succeeded Ahmed Harrari, who was replaced by Hammouchi after the Casablanca bombings of May 16, 2003.
- Has been an advisor to Mohammed VI on counter-terrorism since 1999
The General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) in Morocco faces several challenges, including the need to protect the country from terrorist and criminal elements, given Morocco's geographic location at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This exposes the country to transnational threats such as illegal immigration, human and narcotics trafficking, and terrorist activities.
The DGSN is also tasked with upholding the law and public order, and it plays a crucial role in ensuring the security and safety of the people, economy, and political system of Morocco.
Additionally, the DGSN must address internal security issues, including crime, drugs and weapons trafficking, and terrorist attacks.
The agency works alongside other security forces in the country to mitigate these challenges and maintain stability and safety within Morocco..
Sincerely yours!
